Deaf Training
In Malawi, Deaf people are often overlooked. There are two ear, nose and throat surgeons and three audiologists in the entire country. A chronic shortage of sign language instructors means that most Deaf people have no way of communicating with colleagues at work, teachers at school, employers, police, healthcare workers. etc. Their ability to find work, learn a skill, or live independent lives is severely impacted. The Covid-19 pandemic has made life even more difficult for Deaf people in Malawi, who, for the most part, have been left to fend for themselves.
With the generous support of Stichting Dovenzorg Malawi we are able to train a number of Deaf young adults to become tailors or carpenters.
Our former Deaf tailoring students have formed a co-operative making reusable sanitary pads, and recently completed a 20,000 pad order for an international donor.
Our Deaf carpentry students have been working hard too, learning how to build school chairs, tables and other products.
